Trials of Kapos
After the war was over, all Kapos were put on trial for their actions inside the camps. Most tried to exonerate themselves by saying they were just following orders or some other reason, but juries didn't seem to be swayed by these testimonies. Almost all Kapo guards were sentenced to death or life in prison for crimes against humanity following the Holocaust and World War II. It was rare for a Kapo to be acquitted of charges, but it did happen in some cases. The way these trials were handled has caused much debate to the present day. In a twisted way the Kapos were just doing what they needed to survive; in the process, their actions cost a lot of lives that might otherwise have been spared. This ultimately lead to their imprisonment or execution.
